Shelby split a doubleheader against Oakridge Thursday in
non-conference play, holding off a late Eagles rally to win game two 8-7
after a 9-3 loss in game one.
The Tigers (10-3) raced into
the lead, 4-3, with a four-run second inning in the nightcap,
highlighted by atwo-run homer by DayDay Garcia. Shelby added to the lead
later before Oakridge stormed back with four runs in the final inning.
Leighton Belasco, who entered the game with the tying run at the plate,
saw Oakridge score twice on passed balls but was able to induce a popup
to seal the win.
Chase Simon laced a two-run double for Shelby
in the fifth, part of a three-run inning that made the score 8-3 before
Oakridge's near-comeback.
Garcia had a big game for the
Tigers, getting three hits including his home run. He drove in two runs
and scored two. Garcia also started the game for Shelby, allowing two
earned runs in 6 1/3 innings and striking out six before pitch-count
limits forced him to yield to Belasco, who picked up the save.
The
Tigers fell behind early in game one and couldn't catch up. Evan Waller
doubled twice for rthe Tigers and Simon also got two hits. Jacob
Regeczi pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
