The easy narrative for Reeths-Puffer in 2026 would be redemption. The Rockets spent much of last season ranked in the top 10 before being shut out by Grand Haven in their district opener.
However, Rockets' coach Sarah Bayle said the team isn't focused solely on that. With some new players on the roster this season, the team's focus is on fundamental play and having fun as a means to stay sharp for May and (hopefully) June.
"We are going to be exceptionally focused on the little things and bringing fun back to the game," Bayle said. "We think that by focusing on those things and a lot of hard work, we will be able to achieve our goals of conference, city, districts and beyond."
The Rockets lost all-state star Mady Snyder and Abbie Critchett, two of their biggest power bats, to graduation, and hope to put up offensive numbers in diverse ways this year. Consistent quality at-bats will be a focus point, and the Rockets can rely on speed too.
"We are excited to try some things on offense and we look forward to having a flexible offense," Bayle said.
It also helps that R-P has one of the area's best pitchers to throw in the circle each game. Now a senior, Ferris State commit Lainey McDaniel again put up amazing numbers last season from the rubber and also is an extremely effective slap hitter.
"Lainey has always had a calm demeanor and presence on the field," Bayle said. "I think with her being a senior this year and all of the experience she has, she's ready to really lean into that leadership role and help settle a relatively young team."
McDaniel's battery mate, catcher Tessa Ross, is back too, and in addition to her good work behind the plate, Ross is one of the Rockets' best hitters. Last year, she occupied the No. 3 spot in the batting order, one behind McDaniel.
Other returnees include Olivia Ambler, who will show off increased versatility this year, and Madi Reichert, who will spend more time in the outfield this year to utilize her strong arm. Makenzie Jacobs will play the middle infield spots.
It's not just going to be McDaniel throwing pitches. Two freshmen - Carlie Guikema and Makayla Jewett - are on the varsity roster this year and will get their feet wet in the circle in preparation for likely larger roles in the future. They're both versatile players and will see time around the diamond this spring.
Another varsity newcomer is sophomore Lorelei Herrygers, who has already made an impact as the team's left fielder and leadoff hitter in early games.
"She is quick not only to track down balls, but also on the basepaths," Bayle said. "She will bring a variety of weapons at the plate this year."
R-P is hoping to bring home its third straight GMAA championship this year - Ravenna, whom the Rockets beat in last year's finals, should again be a leading contender - and is eyeing a run at the O-K Green Conference championship. Last season, the Rockets ended the season looking up at Jenison and Byron Center, who tied for the top spot. Out of conference, R-P always looks forward to matchups with Hudsonville.
