Shelby dominated the second half Wednesday night to knock off
McBain Northern Michigan Christian, 3-0, and advance to Saturday's
district final against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
The first
half was scoreless, in part due to a wind blowing against the Tigers,
but also what coach Joe Gorton attributed to a combination of the long
bus ride and some nerves heading into the win-or-go-home matchup. Things
changed dramatically in the second half.
"The second half was all Shelby, as we maintained possession and battered the Comet net with shots on goal," Gorton said.
Tigers
Fernanda Espinosa opened the scoring a few minutes after halftime, and
later in the half, Kylie Brown and Charlee Friedman each added a goal.
Shelby
dominated possession and recorded 18 shots on goal to the Comets' four.
Brylee Friedman saved all four shots for the shutout.
"Shout out to our midfielders tonight," Gorton said. "Kylee Hanson, Lydia Soelberg, and
Brixtyn Friedman were instrumental in making connections throughout the
night. They played in space well, and really helped keep the ball on
Tiger feet."
