Shelby baseball roars past Holton in doubleheader sweep

SHELBY — Shelby was largely dominant in Tuesday's sweep of West Michigan Conference Rivers opponent Holton, rolling to an 11-1 win in game one and roaring back from an early deficit to win game two 7-3.
The Tigers (14-3, 3-1 WMC Rivers) came out of the dugout hot in game one, scoring twice in the first inning. A three-run third inning and a six-run fifth put the game away by mercy rule.
After taking advantage of walks and aggressive baserunning to take a 2-0 lead, Shelby got three straight hits to start the third, with Cam Smith's RBI double kick-starting the three-run frame. In the fifth, four Tigers got run-scoring singles, and Neil Gowell's two-run single ended the game. Leighton Belasco had a two-run single in the inning too, and Chase Simon and Eli Kelley also drove in runs with singles.
DayDay Garcia dominated on the mound for Shelby, striking out five and allowing only two hits. Trevor Weiss and Belasco each got two hits, and Simon drove in three runs.
The Devils answered Shelby's first-inning run - on Simon's RBI single - with two of their own in game two, but the Tigers grabbed the lead for good with a three-run fourth. Gowell drove in the first two runs with a single, and Jaden Furman added a RBI single. Shelby added on throughout the game, and Simon capped a big offensive day with another two-run single in the seventh.
Simon had two hits and three RBI in the game, and Gowell had two RBI. Weiss got the win on the mound, striking out 11 and allowing six hits.
