Oct. 24 public reception, artist talk will cap Visual Language exhibit

Artists who participated in this fall's Visual Language exhibition at the Arts Council of White Lake-Nuveen Center, as well as juror Annamarie Buller, will be part of a free public reception and artist talk Saturday, Oct. 24 highlighting the exhibition.
The exhibition began Tuesday, Sept. 8 and will continue through the Oct. 24 reception, which will take place from 1-3 p.m.
All the art for this exhibit employs text, language, words or poetry with the artists creatively incorporating it boldly, quietly or somewhere in-between. Buller had the challenging job of reviewing the online applications of 51 regional artists submitting 81 works of art. Her review also involved reading all the artists’ statements which were part of their applications. After careful deliberation of the submissions a vision emerged for the overall look of the exhibit, Buller selected 25 works of art by 21 artists.
Viewing the artwork in person also helped her to determine which artists would receive awards. The $200 prize for Outstanding Media & Message went to Wendy Withrow of Grand Rapids for her skillfully hand-crafted accordion fold book entitled, 100 Days: The Persistent Undoing of Us. An Honorable Mention award went to Sarah Lynn B. (Boersen) from Grand Rapids for her video and linocut print entitled, Antiperfect. And H.J. Slider, from Caledonia, also received an Honorable Mention for their assembled sculpture entitled, Yes: In My Backyard.
The event will include a lively conversation about the meaningful use of language in visual art starting at 1:30 p.m. And as always, the ACWL-Nuveen will be serving snacks and beverages. Everyone is welcome. Any questions about the event? Call the ACWL-Nuveen at 231-893-2524, or email nuveen@artswhitelake.org.
