Turnovers submarined Shelby's bid for victory against Manistee Friday night, as the Tigers lost to the Mariners 36-15 in West Michigan Conference Rivers action.
Manistee intercepted three Tiger passes, including on two consecutive possessions in the second half. That spoiled a fairly efficient performance by the Shelby running game, which averaged nearly six yards per carry on the night.
The Tigers (1-3, 0-3 WMC Rivers) went ahead 15-14 in the second quarter on a three-yard run by Wyatt Lamberg, but Manistee responded with two minutes to go with a 29-yard touchdown pass, taking the lead for good.
Trailing 29-15 in the fourth quarter, Shelby drove to the Manistee 10-yard line, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after a third-down play made it fourth-and-20, and the Mariners picked off a pass on that play. They then unleashed a 14-play, 90-yard drive that sunk the Tigers and ended with a touchdown.
Brody Fessenden led the Tiger offense with 89 yards on the ground and 27 receiving. Elijah Dashiell had 66 rushing yards, including a touchdown, and Jaylin Henderson chipped in 62.
Fesseden had six solo tackles and eight assists to spearhead the Shelby defense. Wyatt Protasiewicz had 170 rushing yards for Manistee.
