Montague opened its season with an impressive second-place finish at Friday's Big Rapids Invitational, while Whitehall finished in seventh.
The Wildcats' team score of 382 included three sub-100 rounds and slotted the team in 15 strokes behind Division 2 powerhouse Grand Rapids South Christian.
Two local players finished in the top 10, led by the Vikings' Riley Shafer, who shot an 84 and took third place. Shafer made a birdie during her round. Also locally, Montague's Addi Smith had an 89 and took ninth place. She also made one birdie.
Brynlee Kessler had a 91 for Montague, followed by Molly Mulder with a 97 and Marguerite O'Connell with a 105.
"The girls all agreed there’s plenty of room to improve, which makes a runner-up finish a pretty exciting way to start the season," Montague coach Phil Kerr said via Facebook.
For the Vikings, returning starter Kelsie McClure shot a 93. Addie Bennett shot a 123 and Avi Mussman had a 126.
