Restoration of Dowling House subject of next Historical Society meeting June 18

The June meeting of the White Lake Area Historical Society will offer a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges and rewards of preserving one of the White Lake area's historic homes.
On Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m., the White Lake Area Historical Society will present a program titled "Refreshing the Exterior of a Historic House: The Dowling House" at the historic Dowling House, located at 8727 Sheridan Street in Montague.
Built and completed in 1875 by George E. Dowling, the home has been continuously occupied for more than 150 years. The current owners, who purchased the house in 1999, recently completed a major exterior restoration project and will share the story of the work involved in preserving this important local landmark. Adding a personal connection to the story, one of the current owners grew up in the house during the 1960s.
The presentation will include the history of the house and its occupants, with a particular focus on the extensive six-month restoration project. Attendees will learn about the process of selecting and applying five different exterior paint colors, repairing and replacing deteriorated siding and restoring porches.
Through photographs and printed materials, visitors will see how careful planning and craftsmanship helped preserve the character of this historic 13-room home while preparing it for future generations.
Because the presentation centers on the exterior restoration work, the program will be held outdoors on the grounds of the Dowling House. Seating will be located on the driveway in a shaded area. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. In the event of rain, a tent will be available.
Whether you own an older home, are interested in historic preservation, or simply enjoy learning about local history, this program offers a review of the history and an inside look at the work required to maintain one of the White Lake area's architectural treasures.
The program is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend.
