Hesperia's Fraser takes 3rd in high jump at state track finals; pair of Falcons come close to medals

Hesperia freshman McKenna Fraser placed third in high jump at Saturday's Division 4 state finals in Hudsonville, serving notice that she will be a threat for the top spot for years to come.
Fraser posted a mark of 5-2, tying her personal best. She tied for the second-highest height cleared at the meet, though Gobles' Taylor Cooley cleared 5-2 in fewer attempts and therefore finished second.
Also for Hesperia, Emily McCallum finished in 14th place in the shot put, posting a mark of 32-3.5. On the boys' side, Nate Ruhstorfer took 18th place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.04 seconds, and the 400 relay team of Zach Loughridge, Malakai Sellers, Dominick Rivera and Andy Lopez-Garcia placed 29th (48.08).

Pentwater also competed at the meet, narrowly missing a pair of all-state medals. Sophomoe Chase McGuire-VanGills, who was competing in his third straight state meet, delivered a quality effort in the 300-meter hurdles, outpacing his 17th-place ranking heading into the meet and finishing ninth in the event. He posted a time of 42.19 seconds, just 0.13 away from a medal.
"Missing a spot on the podium by just 0.13 seconds is certainly heartbreaking, but Chase’s accomplishment is remarkable," Pentwater coach Erika Fatura said. "Competing against the best athletes in Michigan, he proved he belongs among them."
Senior Logan Fatura, the coach's son, also came very close to a medal, placing 10th in the discus with a throw of 136-0. He missed advancing to the event finals by only three inches. Fatura also finished 24th in the shot put with a mark of 39-1.25.
"While the disappointment was real, it should not overshadow what has been an outstanding track & field career," coach Fatura said. "Logan leaves Pentwater as a two-time school record holder in the discus and as a member of the school-record 4x100 relay team. His dedication, leadership, and work ethic have left a lasting mark on our program."
