Hesperia track teams edge Shelby at Shelby Tri

SHELBY — Hesperia's teams edged Shelby Tuesday at the Shelby Tri, though both teams came out on the short end against Mason County Central.
The Panther boys beat Shelby 62-58 and the girls won 60-56. Hesperia lost to MCC 92-31 (boys) and 72.5-48.5 (girls), while the Tigers fell to the Spartans 81-37 (boys) and 71-42 (girls).
Hesperia's Nate Ruhstorfer scored wins in two events, including a personal best performance in the 1,600-meter run. He won that race in a time of 5:03.5. Ruhstorfer also won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.01 seconds. Those were the Panthers' only two wins in the boys' meet.
On the girls' side, Emily McCallum continued a solid season in shot put with a first-place finish, posting a mark of 33-2, and Sophia Fraser won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 19.29 seconds. Hesperia also won two girls' relays. In the 400 relay, the team of Betty Jo Gerhardt, Mollie Craig, Jolie Kraus and Fraser won in a time of 59.24 seconds, and in the 800 relay, it was Chloe Rickard, Fraser, Kraus and McCallum in a time of 2:03.1.
The Tiger boys won four events, including a pair of individual events. Chace Oakes set a personal best of 17-7.5 to win the long jump, and Parker Weirich took first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:25.4. In the relays, the Tiger team of Isaac Garcia, Brody Fessenden, Elijah Dashiell and Jaylin Henderson won the 400-meter race in a time of 46.18 seconds, and the team of Brycen Brown, Weirich, Oakes and Jaciel Moreno won the 3,200 race in a time of 9:43.4. 
Raya Clark led the Tiger girls with a personal best long jump of 14-8.5, taking first place. Kathryn Beyer added her own personal best of 2:47.2 in the 800-meter run to win that race. Haylie Smith won the high jump (4-8) and Noel Parker won the 1,600 (6:16.3). Parker, Beyer, Grace Hasenbank and April Luna also teamed up to win the 3,200 relay (12:06.6).
