Bobby Jazwinski continued to lower his own Whitehall school record in cross-country Saturday at the Oakridge Invitational, helping the Viking boys earn first place as a team in the White (large-school) division.
Jazwinski's winning time of 14:23 nipped his previous Viking record by less than a second and helped the team edge Union by six points, 57-63, for the top spot.
Rex Pumford and Ian Dennis also took top-10 finishes for the Vikings. Pumford was third in a time of 15:57, and Dennis finished eighth in a time of 17:42. Pumford's time was a personal best.
Alex Winczewski finished 17th for the Vikes (18:42), and Greyson Jones (29th, 19:56) just beat out teammate Jason Sheaffer at the line to close out the team scoring. Both cleared 20 minutes for the first time.
Reeths-Puffer's girls team finished second in the division, edging Whitehall 56-63 for that position. The two teams combined for six of the top 10 individual finishers. Hope Gordon paced the Rockets by coming in fourth (21:18), followed by Harper Roberts in seventh (21:40) and Riley Bordeaux in eighth (21:50). Gordon and Bordeaux set personal best times. Darcy Keefe finished 13th (23:02) and Kelsea Kent was 26th, also setting a personal best (26:09).
Gabrielle Chevez led the Viking girls, finishing third in the race with a time of 20:41. Madi Heuschele was sixth (21:24) and Reese Hesse was ninth (21:51). Vivian Hesse (22nd, a personal best 23:43) and Ryanne Ellsworth (24th, 24:16) also scored for the team.
The Rocket boys finished sixth and their top four finishers each set personal bests. The team was led by Gabriel Luna in 14th place (18:32), who edged Kyron Novak by seven seconds as Novak took 15th. Kasyn Novak placed 23rd (19:17), Jonathan Steenhagen was 28th (19:36) and Bryce Blair finished 34th (20:30).
