HART - At the May 12 Hart City Council meeting, the Hart Police Department (HPD) presented their 2025 Annual Report where it was noted the department had six full-time officers, one part-time officer and three pursuit-rated vehicles. The one part-time officer is also employed full-time with the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office.
The report stated the department continually strives to train and keep updated on new and changing laws. Each year, the department is required to fulfill a minimum of 24 hours of mandated training, with eight hours being Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards-designated training and 16 hours of agency-selected training. The department uses Police One Academy Online to assist in meeting some of the required mandates.
New in 2025 was the implementation of Karpel, a criminal case management platform that is utilized by prosecuting and district attorney offices throughout the United States. The platform eliminates and/or saves on the use of paper and decreases the time officers have to spend physically taking reports to the courthouse.
The report went on to say the police department continues to be involved in the following community programs - TEAM at Hart Middle School, the Bulletproof Vest Program, the National Night Out event in Shelby Township, Hometown Heroes at Tractor Supply in Hart and Roy’s Kids Christmas gift distribution program.
In 2025 the HPD submitted 134 incident reports, not including vehicle violation reports, to the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office for review. That total was the third-highest number of incident reports submitted in the county, behind the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police, Hart Post.
The department also reported it had 161 arrests and a total of 1,818 complaints or calls for service. These totals were down from the calendar year 2024. The top list of complaints included Traffic Violations (97), Obstruction of Justice (55), and Larceny (54).
