Shelby won the Hesperia Tournament Saturday with a pair of
dominating wins. The Tigers defeated Mason County Central 12-5 and then
routed Montabella 17-7.
The Tigers wasted little time getting
off to a good start, scoring in each of the first two innings against
MCC and then adding five more runs in the third and three in the fourth
to take a commanding lead.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Jordan
Wolting and Emma Stovall sparked the third-inning outburst, and Jaedyn
Allen, Daniella Zarraga and Gabby LaFever added run-scoring singles
later in the inning.
Wolting had another huge game, going
4-for-4 and scoring four runs. Stovall had three hits and four RBI, and
Allen and LaFever each had two hits. Allen drove in four runs too.
Wolting picked up the win, striking out seven and allowing two earned
runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Shelby had to answer Montabella's early
scoring in the championship game, but the Tigers scored four times in
the third to grab a 9-7 lead and go ahead for good. Seven more runs in
the fourth secured the win.
The Tigers racked up six
extra-base hits against Montabella, including a double and a triple by
Stovall, who had three hits in all. Jayna Burmeister went 4-for-4, with
two runs and two RBI, and LaFever had three hits. Wolting, Hali Hayes
and Allie Stovall each had two hits. Burmeister got the win, striking
out eight and allowing two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Hesperia
lost to Montabella in the opener, 16-8. The Panthers briefly had a lead
after scoring three times in the first inning, but the Mustangs went
ahead for good in the second. Gabby Tanner had three hits for Hesperia,
and Olivia Gerard and Madesyn Bolles had two apiece.
