Pentwater took part in a new, novel event Tuesday when it
participated in the Mesick Relays, a twist on the usual cross-country
races.
Fans of running are familiar with relay races in track
and field, but Tuesday saw the concept ported to cross-country, with
teams of two runners each running for two miles and high-fiving as a
relay handoff.
"It was such a fun twist on cross-country, and
our Falcons loved it," Pentwater coach Erika Fatura said. "Three of our
duos finished in the top eight, earning six varsity medals."
The
Falcons had two pairs in each of the boys' and girls' races. Bailey
Case and Lily Smith were the top Pentwater girls pair, with their
combined four-mile time of 31:28.6 earning fourth place. Two other
Pentwater pairs finished eighth - in the girls' race, Maggie Jorissen
and Valerie Smith totaled a time of 41:22.1, and in the boys' race, Ben
Roberson and Skyler Compton finished eighth with a total time of
28:22.0. Also for the Falcons, Michael Smith and Colton Jorissen had a
total time of 37:08.96.
Fatura added that the Falcons'
middle-school girls' team took first place in their race, which took
place under the traditional two-mile individual format.
