Boy Scout Cabin at John Gurney Park.jpeg

Scout cabin in John Gurney Park slated for demolition

For nearly 50 years, local Boy Scouts came together at the cabin in John Gurney Park in Hart as a place of learning, friendship and tradition. Generations of scouts gathered there to develop leadership skills, prepare for outdoor adventures and build lasting connections with fellow troop members. The cabin served as more than just a meeting place – ”It symbolized how life and scouting 'used to be,'" said Scoutmaster Christopher Jeruzal.
The decision to demolish the decades-old structure came after extensive consideration and evaluation by the City of Hart, who owns and governs John Gurney Park. As the building continued to age, concerns about its condition and safety became increasingly difficult to ignore. Ultimately, city officials determined that the cabin had deteriorated to a point where it could no longer be safely used.
While the structure itself will soon be gone, Jeruzal noted that its impact on the generations of scouts who used it will not be forgotten through the merit badges they earned, the service projects they planned and the memories they created that will last a lifetime.
“Our troops still plan to fish the waters and use the park when possible,” stated Jeruzal. “One thing I know about Hart Scouts is that they are a resilient and enthusiastic group of young men. They are hard workers, and most of all they love scouting.”
