Mears Museum & Historical Complex opens June 20

On June 3, the 4th graders from Spitler Elementary School came to the Mears Museum & Historical Complex and toured the buildings there. The students were divided into groups and took turns visiting each structure and the treasures inside. OCH&GS volunteers were on hand to tell about the buildings and artifacts. Organizers would like to extend a special thanks to all of the volunteers.
On June 20, the Mears Museum & Historical Complex will be open to visitors throughout the summer on both Saturdays and Sundays, from 1-4 p.m. each day, through Labor Day. Volunteers will meet visitors with historical information about the eight different buildings located there as they step back in time to learn about Swift Lathers' house and legacy.
Visitors can find out how the dunes became so popular and can even check out the vintage dune buggies and a wonderful lighthouse exhibit. There is also much to see inside the home of Swift Lathers, the editor of the "World's Smallest Newspaper - The Mears Newz," and also inside the historic church, primitive lakeside cottage and other buildings on the property. There is a large collection of vintage equipment in the Agricultural Building, as well as hundreds of other artifacts. Guide by Cell audio tours are also available.
The museum complex is located at 5809 W. Fox Road, Mears. Admission is free. Donations and volunteers are always welcome.
