Whitehall finished a solid second place, with Montague in third, at
Friday's Montague Invitational at Old Channel Trail Golf Course.
The Vikings' team score was 335, five strokes better than Montague's and just seven shots behind meet champion North Muskegon.
Jones
McDowell finished in a third-place tie overall to top local players,
shooting a 76. McDowell played consistent golf throughout the day, never
shooting worse than a bogey. He knocked in a birdie on the par-4 12th
hole. That birdie started a very strong stretch for McDowell, who made
par on the next five consecutive holes and eight of the next nine.
Montague's
Michael Flanagan took fifth with a 78. At one point, he made par on
seven out of eight holes. Ethan Balon placed seventh for the Wildcats
with an 83.
Whitehall's Rylan Johnson and Gabe Gilbert each
shot an 86, tying for 10th place. Both Vikings made a birdie during
their rounds.
William Burger closed the scoring for Whitehall
with an 87 and also made a birdie in his round. Tanner DeVries and Jonah
Henderson each shot an 89 for Montague.
Both Whitehall and
Montague also fielded B teams in the meet. The Viking B teamers placed
sixth out of 10 schools with a 373, and Montague's B team shot a 400 to
take 10th. Montague B's Bobby Orwat played a great round and
finished in an eighth-place tie overall, shooting an 85. He only did
worse than a bogey on two holes. Dominic Puehler led the Vikings' B team
with a score of 88.
