Whitehall golf edges Montague for 2nd place at Old Channel Trail tournament

Whitehall finished a solid second place, with Montague in third, at Friday's Montague Invitational at Old Channel Trail Golf Course.
The Vikings' team score was 335, five strokes better than Montague's and just seven shots behind meet champion North Muskegon.
Jones McDowell finished in a third-place tie overall to top local players, shooting a 76. McDowell played consistent golf throughout the day, never shooting worse than a bogey. He knocked in a birdie on the par-4 12th hole. That birdie started a very strong stretch for McDowell, who made par on the next five consecutive holes and eight of the next nine.
Montague's Michael Flanagan took fifth with a 78. At one point, he made par on seven out of eight holes. Ethan Balon placed seventh for the Wildcats with an 83.
Whitehall's Rylan Johnson and Gabe Gilbert each shot an 86, tying for 10th place. Both Vikings made a birdie during their rounds.
William Burger closed the scoring for Whitehall with an 87 and also made a birdie in his round. Tanner DeVries and Jonah Henderson each shot an 89 for Montague.
Both Whitehall and Montague also fielded B teams in the meet. The Viking B teamers placed sixth out of 10 schools with a 373, and Montague's B team shot a 400 to take 10th.
Montague B's Bobby Orwat played a great round and finished in an eighth-place tie overall, shooting an 85. He only did worse than a bogey on two holes. Dominic Puehler led the Vikings' B team with a score of 88.
