Whitehall finished its team track season with a solid performance at the Division 2 regionals in Allendale Saturday. The Viking boys finished fourth, one point behind third-place Hopkins, and the Whitehall girls took 12th.
The Viking boys earned several state qualifications and had one big highlight with the 3,200-meter relay team breaking the school record. The team of Jevon Hilliard, Rex Pumford, Javi LeBlanc and Bobby Jazwinski set the new mark with a time of 7:57.7, also winning the regional championship in the event. They'll enter the state finals, set for this Saturday in Hamilton, as the No. 3 seed in the event.
Jazwinski also took the regional title in the 3,200-meter run, blowing away the field with a season best time of 9:28.8, over 18 seconds ahead of anyone else.
Caden Bowyer also earned himself a state spot, taking second in the discus with a throw of 157-1. Two other Vikings qualified by beating the additional qualifier standard; Graysen Olstrom set a personal best of 13-5 and took third in the pole vault, and LeBlanc got a spot in the 800 by running a personal best time of 1:58.4, taking third.
Other Viking medalists included Elijah Smith, fourth in the pole vault (5-7); Judd Musk, fifth in the 110 hurdles (a personal best 15.70); Hilliard, seventh in the 400 (52.75); Tim Vieira, seventh in the 200 (23.69); Hunter Parsons, seventh in the 3,200 (10:30.4); Isaiah Lewis, seventh in the pole vault (12-2); and Cole Essebaggers, eighth in the long jump (20-0).
The boys' team also medaled in the 800 relay, as the team of Vieira, Brayen Sorensen, Essebaggers and Musk finished eighth (1:35.2).
The Viking girls' team was unable to get anyone to the state meet, but did pick up three medals. Aaliyah Jamison earned the Vikes' highest finish, fourth in the shot put (33-9). Teammate Carrianna Gibbons placed seventh in the same event and set a personal best (31-5). Gabrielle Chevez finished eighth in the 1,600 and also set a personal best (5:44.7).
