MONTAGUE — Montague swept Shelby Thursday in a doubleheader that
matched top teams from the West Michigan Conference Lakes and Rivers
divisions.
The Wildcats exploded for eight runs in the fourth
inning of game one to erase a 3-0 Tiger lead and take an 8-4 victory.
Seven of the runs scored with two out.
Eli Petersen got
Montague on the board with a sacrifice fly, and with two out the Wildcat
bats caught fire. Cole Herremans tied the game with a two-run single,
the first of six straight singles. Levi Auger had a run-scoring single
to give Montague the lead, and Cooper Bradley followed with a single
that resulted in two more runs after a Tiger error. Cole Moss then
scored a run with a single, and Petersen, at bat for the second time in
the inning, reached on an error that scored Moss.
Fletcher Thommen got two hits in the game, and Karter Johnson allowed one earned run on eight hits, striking out four.
Montague
won game two 11-1, breaking open a scoreless tie by scoring three runs
in the third inning, five in the fourth and three more in the fifth to
end the game by mercy rule.
Moss' RBI triple highlighted the
Wildcats' initial burst, and he scored on a wild pitch in the next
at-bat. The 'Cats then took advantage of walks, wild pitches and errors
in the fourth inning. Auger had a RBI single in the inning and ended the
game with another RBI single in the fifth.
Dylan Bailey joined Auger in having two RBI in the win. Caleb Rice struck out six and allowed five hits.
