Martin reaches No. 2 singles semis for Whitehall tennis at regionals

Whitehall junior Akeelah Martin reached the semifinals at No. 2 singles at Friday's Division 4 regional tournament, the furthest advancement by a Viking in the bracket.
Martin was seeded third and received a bye in the bracket, then cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over North Muskegon's Emmi VanWyck in round two. In the semifinals, Martin faced off with the No. 2 seed, NorthPointe Christian's Lydia Burkman, falling 6-0, 6-3.
The Vikings won two other matches at regionals, both in the first round. At No. 4 singles, Savanna Koernke won a close match over Western Michigan Christian's Drew Coleman, 6-4, 7-5, before bowing out to top seed and eventual regional champ Kayla Koppenhofer of NorthPointe Christian. At No. 3 doubles, Emily VanDam/Bea Lewis blanked their first-round foe, Muskegon Catholic's Miranda Navarro/Bridget Bingham, before also running into the top seed and eventual champs, Grand Rapids Catholic Central's Jessica Milanowski/Anna Cotter.
