Whitehall softball dominates in sweep of Manistee

WHITEHALL — Whitehall picked up a sweep in its West Michigan Conference Lakes opening doubleheader Tuesday, defeating Manistee 15-0 and 12-2 for its first wins of the season.
The Vikings (2-6, 2-0 WMC Lakes) pitched well throughout the doubleheader. Beth LeaTrea allowed just one hit and struck out nine in her mercy-rule shortened four-inning outing in game one, and Emily Ames struck out eight and allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings in game two.
Whitehall's bats did the job throughout the two games as well. Kayden Johnson opened the scoring with a RBI single in the first inning of game one, part of a three-hit day that saw her drive in four runs. She had a double in the game as well. Janie Fagan and Maggy Michaelson got two hits each, and one of Michaelson's was a double. Six different Whitehall batters scored two runs each.

Game two got off to a slower start for the Vikings, and the game was tied 1-1 going into the third inning. However, Whitehall caught fire at that point, adding 11 runs in the next three trips to the plate to pick up a second mercy-rule win.
Ryleigh Smith got things going for the Vikes with a two-run single, and Beth LeaTrea followed with a RBI single. Toree Carlson's two-run single kept the party going in the fourth inning, and LeaTrea had a RBI double to follow. Smith ripped a RBI double to cap the scoring in the fifth after Johnson and Fagan had consecutive RBI singles.
