WHITEHALL — Whitehall dropped its West Michigan Conference Lakes opening doubleheader to Manistee Tuesday, 14-1 and 5-2.
Game
one got away from the Vikings (2-4, 0-2 WMC Lakes) in the fifth inning,
when Manistee scored 11 runs thanks to walks, balks and some timely
hitting by the Mariners. Up until that point, it had been a closely
contested game with the Vikings trailing 3-1.
Noah Morse had
Whitehall's big hit in the opener, a RBI double. Hunter Peterson got two
hits in the game. Evan Thomas allowed two earned runs in four innings
of work, striking out eight and walking five.
The Vikes went
ahead 2-1 in the third inning of game two, but were unable to hold the
lead late. Noah Peterson ripped a RBI double in the second and Justin
Jensen gave Whitehall the lead with a sacrifice fly in the third.
Manistee got two hits to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and both
those hits came around to score later in the inning. In the fifth, the
first two Mariner batters were hit by pitches, and both those batters
came around to score as well.
Five Whitehall batters got a hit apiece in the second game. Brayden Kelley struck out five in a complete game on the mound.
