SHELBY — Montague edged Whitehall by one stroke, 355-356, to finish eighth out of 14 teams Monday at the Shelby Invitational.
Ethan
Balon was the top local finisher at the meet, tying for 10th place
overall with a score of 81. Balon made a birdie during his round.
Montague
coach Brad Tate said he's pleased with his team's handling of the
unusual circumstances of this season, with heavy rain wiping out some
early meets and making practice schedules unpredictable.
"Our very young team has shown a lot of determination to compete in
our first two matches of the year," Tate said. "The weather has been very windy and
cold and the golf courses have been very wet from all of the rain that
we have received lately. But the team has not made any excuses and have
done the best that they can."
Whitehall's Finn Novy chips out of the rough during Monday's Shelby Invitational. The Vikings finished 9th at the meet.
Tanner DeVries was the No. 2
scorer for Montague, shooting a 90 that included a pair of birdies.
Michael Flanagan and Jonah Henderson each shot a 92 to round out Wildcat
scoring.
"Everyone
on our team is learning something from every match that they play in and
this is very important," Tate said. "These lessons will help us develop and be a
much better team at the end of the season. The kids are very committed
to working hard at practice and they want to get better."
William
Burger and Rylan Johnson paced the Vikings at the meet, shooting an 84
and an 87 respectively. Burger scored a birdie in his round.
Gabe Gilbert had a 92 and Jones McDowell had a 93, edging teammate Finn Novy by a stroke to close out Whitehall scoring.
