Montague earned two big West Michigan Conference Lakes wins over
Oakridge Tuesday, 7-1 and 9-8, as it opened defense of its WMC Lakes
championship.
In game two, the Wildcats (2-2, 2-0 WMC Lakes)
held off a furious fifth-inning comeback in which the Eagles scored six
times before Cole Moss, who came on in relief during the inning, ended
the threat with a strikeout. The game was then called for darkness.
Montague
ripped off multi-run innings in each of its first three trips to the
plate to build a 9-1 lead, taking advantage of some Eagle walks and
fielding miscues. The biggest hits of the early scoring run were doubles
by Chase Kurtzhal and Karter Johnson in the third inning; both came
around to score. Cole Herremans had a RBI single as well.
Herremans pitched 4 2/3 innings to get the win, striking out nine and allowing two earned runs.
In
game one, Montague grabbed a first-inning lead by scoring twice and
rode a great pitching performance by Eli Petersen to the victory.
Petersen struck out eight batters and allowed only two hits and a run in
six innings.
Cooper Bradley, Kurtzhal and Petersen each got
two hits for Montague in the win, and Petersen drove in two runs. Levi
Auger drew three walks, and Moss was walked twice.
