A dramatic three-run home run by Cole Moss in game one of
Saturday's doubleheader against Calvin Christian gave the Wildcats the
win in game one of what turned out to be a thrilling sweep of the
Squires. The Wildcats won the games 4-3 and 6-5.
Moss stepped
in the box in the seventh inning of game one with his team trailing 3-1
and two runners on base, thanks to a one-out double by Levi Auger
followed by a tough walk from Cooper Bradley after fouling off the first
two pitches of the at-bat. Moss smashed the 2-1 pitch over the left
field wall to give his team the lead, and Remi Lohman retired Calvin
Christian in order in the bottom of the inning to polish off the
victory.
Calvin Christian scored twice in the first inning of
the game and led throughout until Moss' impressive swing in the final
inning. Dylan Bailey hit a RBI single in the fourth to make it 2-1, and
Calvin added a run in the fifth.
Montague's pitching was
impressive in game one with only three hits allowed and no earned runs.
Cole Herremans pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out six, surrendering
two hits, and Lohman finished the game with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit,
shutout relief to get the win.
Moss' homer was his second hit of the day, and five other Wildcats got a hit apiece. Bradley singled and walked.
Game
two was hardly any less exciting, going to extra innings before Bradley
drove in the winning run in the eighth on a single to score Bailey, who
reached on an error earlier in the inning. The 'Cats (10-2), who led
most of the game until Calvin tied it up at 4 with three runs in the
fifth and went ahead in the sixth, forced extra innings when Lohman
singled in Moss with one out in the seventh. Moss singled to lead off
the inning and got to second on Fletcher Thommen's sacrifice bunt.
Moss
got three more hits for Montague in the win, scoring twice, and Bradley
got two hits. Eli Petersen had an excellent start, striking out eight
and allowing no earned runs on two hits in four innings; he likely would
have pitched longer but was lifted so pitch-count limits didn't make
him unavailable for this week's conference matchup with Fremont. Eli
Pendell pitched the final three innings for the win, allowing one run on
three hits and fanning two.
