Pentwater played one of its best games of the year Thursday to
defeat Mason County Eastern 73-54 "on a night that meant more than
basketball," Falcons' coach Ashley Lubera said.
The extra
meaning was because it was the final home game for the Falcon seniors,
but even more importantly because of a special Pink and Blue Out event
the Falcons hosted in support of Pentwater student Ben Jorissen.
According to a Give In Kind page set up late last year for Jorissen and
his family, he is battling brain cancer.
The Falcon offense
exploded in the second half of the game, outscoring MCE 47-26 to break
open a close contest. MCE, which beat the Falcons in January, opened up a
nine-point lead early in the third quarter, but after that the Falcons
gained control of the game.
Brody Austin led the team with 21
points - nine of them in the third quarter alone - and Jacobo Martin
scored 14 in the second half to end the night with 16.
The
Falcons (5-12, 4-8 West Michigan D League) shot a very solid 43% from
the floor for the game and recorded 10 steals while only turning the
ball over 10 times themselves. Abram Kieda had eight rebounds to go with
his 15 points, and Wyatt Roberts passed out four assists.
"This night was bigger than the scoreboard," Lubera said. "It was about seniors leaving
their mark. It was about a community dressed in pink and blue. And most
importantly, it was about standing behind one of our own."
