It was a productive day for the three local girls wrestling squads
Saturday at the Grand Haven Invitational, with Kassie Sapp bringing home
a 130-pound championship for Whitehall as the big highlight.
Sapp's
points helped propel the Vikings to finish seventh out of over 30
teams. Reeths-Puffer tied for 13th place, and Montague was 21st.
Sapp
dominated her bracket, scoring three consecutive pins to reach the
finals and then dispatching Grand Haven's Megan Brower by technical fall
for the title.
The Vikings' other two grapplers each finished
third. Miley Manzo went 4-1 at 115, scoring three pins and a technical
fall. Makenna DeShong earned a third-place finish at 190, going 2-1 with
two pins.
Both of the Rockets' wrestlers placed in the top
three as well. Sidney Shackelford was second for the Rockets at 155,
pinning each of her first two opponents to reach the title match.
Ludington's Katy Gable turned Shackelford back in the finals. Also for
R-P, Brooklyn Colson was third at 130, going 3-1 with two pins and a
technical fall.
Zaniya Meza led Montague finishers with a
third-place finish at 110, scoring two pins to roar back from an opening
loss. Emma Trevino finished fourth at 190, and Alex Dugan was fifth at
130.
“The girls are flashing serious potential every weekend, with moments of
brilliance that get us excited," Montague coach Kris Maddox said. "We’re pushing for that next level of
consistency, and with more matches ahead this season, we look forward to
seeing it."
