Whitehall enjoyed its best performance of the
season Saturday at the Martin Clipper Classic, winning all five of its
matches to take the tournament championship.
Among the
Vikings' victories were thrilling triumphs over Division 3 No. 3-ranked
Allegan and Division 4 No. 6-ranked Clinton, which each came down to the
final bouts. The Vikings erased a late nine-point deficit against
Allegan with clutch pins by Easton Wisniewski and Billy Darke in the
final two bouts, winning the match 34-32. Against Clinton, Robert
Belinger entered the final bout at 106 pounds needing to avoid being
pinned to win the match, and he did his job, losing a 5-4 decision to
secure the 41-38 team victory.
"Backs were
against the wall in three duals today," the wrestling program posted
to its Facebook page; Whitehall also earned a hard-fought win over
Bronson, 46-31. "They banded together
and found a way to win."
Also during the tournament, Whitehall defeated St. Joseph 64-18 and beat Otsego 52-20.
Dom
Zygmuntowski and Max Krukowski highlighted individual Viking efforts at
the meet, each posting perfect 5-0 records. Both scored pins in four of
their victories.
Also for Whitehall, Belinger, Cody Manzo and
Liam Leeke each went 4-1. Manzo and Leeke each had two pin victories
and a technical fall, and Belinger recorded a pair of technical falls
and a pin. Blake Wallace added a 3-1 record with two pins.
