Volunteers on verge of opening entire Blue Lake Twp. trail

Blue Lake Township Park made significant progress in 2025, with 4.5 miles of the Green Segment now complete. The remaining half mile is scheduled to be finished in spring 2026, at which time the final segment of the Green Trail will officially open.
This year’s volunteer effort was outstanding. A total of 1,360 volunteer hours were logged—an impressive 64 percent increase over 2024. Their dedication played a critical role in moving the project forward.
Scott Brannam was instrumental in planning and cutting the trails with minimal environmental impact. Great care was taken to follow the most natural paths through the forest while avoiding sensitive wildlife habitats. Particular attention was given to preserving the breeding areas of the Blanding’s Turtle and the Karner Blue Butterfly. Blue Lake Township’s primary goal throughout the project has been the creation of sustainable trails.
Angel Brannam coordinated with volunteers to complete trail finishing, which included removing roots and loam, leveling uneven surfaces, and raking the trails to create a smooth, safe experience for hikers and mountain bikers.
Special thanks go to the following volunteers for their help with trail finishing: Bob Tuttle, Jan Erkenbrack, Sara Smart, Kevin Goff, Chris Billie, Remy, Cole, Kim Breuker, Jeff P., Jeff Abram, Britt and Craig Price, Maggie and Greg Maxey and Scott and Angel Brannam. This project would not have been possible without their time and commitment.
Effective January 1, 2026, pets will no longer be permitted in the park. After multiple attempts to accommodate pets, the decision was made to protect wildlife and sensitive habitats. Despite posted signage, pets were often off-leash and running through wildlife areas, disrupting habitats. Pet waste was found everywhere. Additionally, there is no designated beach in the park; the shoreline is a wetland that supports waterfowl. We sincerely apologize to responsible pet owners who followed the rules.
There will be additional opportunities to volunteer in 2026, including completing the remaining half mile of trail, cleaning up debris, and assisting with a new project. Please contact Angel Brannam at liberg_am@yahoo;com or call 231-571-2510 for more information on volunteer opportunities.
We invite the community to visit Blue Lake Township Park and enjoy all it has to offer. This serene park provides much to see and appreciate. Please remember that trails are designated for hiking, jogging, and non-motorized bicycles, and be sure to follow proper trail etiquette.
