Montague knew coming into the season that putting the ball in the basket wouldn't be the easiest part of its game. The Wildcats graduated nearly everyone from last season's team, and offense is usually the most difficult part of the game to pick up for a young player at a new level.
That held true Monday in the Wildcats' season-opening 35-25 defeat to Fruitport, but coach Jess DeBruin said she was pleased with her team's effort level throughout the night.
"With
it being the first game of the season and having a young team, we came
out strong and battled to the end," DeBruin said. "I'm proud of how the girls played
tonight."
The Wildcats never allowed the game to get out of hand, trailing 21-14 at halftime. They were still down seven going into the final quarter before Fruitport was able to add to its margin, holding Montague to three points in those eight minutes.
Gentry Knop led the way for Montague with 10 points. Molly Mulder chipped in six points and Annelyse Schneider added four.
