Montague boys basketball edged by Manistee in conference opener

Montague lost a hard-fought battle to open West Michigan Conference Lakes play against Manistee Friday, 49-45.
The game was tied after the third quarter thanks to the Wildcats' erasing a five-point halftime deficit, but the visiting Mariners eked out the win.
"We did play better overall from game one to game two," Montague coach Nick Thaler said. "We played with much better effort, and forced Manistee to play faster than they are accustomed to in spots.
"We had our opportunities to put this one away, but could not capitalize."
Cole Herremans had a big night, going for 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 'Cats (0-2, 0-1 WMC Lakes).
