Whitehall tennis defeats Portland at Portland Invite

Whitehall tennis opened its season at the Portland Invitational Saturday. The Vikings earned a 5-3 win over the host Red Raiders and lost an 8-0 decision to state powerhouse Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
All five Whitehall wins over Portland came in straight sets. Evan Schuitema was impressive in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Wyatt Burger won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
Three doubles wins proved to be the difference in the match, with the winning duos combining to allow only seven points. Evan Thomas/Remington Whelpley won by a 6-3, 6-0 margin at No. 2 doubles, and Cameron Cook/Adam Sikkenga won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Lukas McKee/Jonathan Roberge rounded out the doubles wins with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 doubles.
Wyatt Burger was the Vikings' top performer against University Liggett, taking opponent Davis Ford to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-0, 6-7, 10-8.
