Reeths-Puffer golf edges Montague by a stroke at Jenison Invite; McCollum, Fox have solid starts

Reeths-Puffer edged out Montague by one stroke as the two local squads opened their season Friday at the Jenison Invitational.
The Rockets shot a 397 to finish in 11th place in the 16-team field, while Montague had a 398 and took 12th.
R-P's Sophia McCollum enjoyed a fine performance, shooting a 79 to earn a fifth-place finish. She made a birdie on the 14th hole and shot bogey or better on all but one hole. Olivia Ambler was the Rockets' No. 2 scorer, with a 92, a 14-stroke improvement from the same meet a year ago.
“I am really happy for Sophia and Olivia," R-P coach Matt Pallett said. "They both earned All-Tournament Team medals for their fine play. Both competed in tournaments this summer to get them prepared for the season. They both showed a lot of maturity on the course and persevered through a few tough stretches.”
Also for R-P, Ella Voorhies shot a 98, including a birdie on the 12th hole, and Keeley Cole posted a 128 in her first-ever round at The Meadows Golf Course.
Cadence Fox paced Montague with an 89, good for 13th place in the meet. She made birdies on both the first and third holes. Brynlee Kessler posted a 94, including one birdie. Addi Smith shot a 113 and Marguerite O'Connell added a 121.
