Whitehall baseball splits low-scoring doubleheader with Manistee

Whitehall split a well-pitched doubleheader against West Michigan Conference Lakes foe Manistee Monday, taking game two 4-1 after the Mariners won a 2-1 decision in the opener.
The Vikings (7-15, 6-3 WMC Lakes) fell behind in the first inning before tying things up in the third and going ahead with a three-run fourth inning. Each of Whitehall's first two runs of the game scored on an error, and the Vikes were able to make Manistee pay with two more runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded hit batter and a sacrifice fly by Nate Betz.
The star of the nightcap, though, was Evan Thomas, who tossed a complete game one-hitter and struck out nine. His only run allowed was unearned. He also got two of the team's five hits and scored a run.
Manistee scored both its runs of the opening game in the first inning. The Vikings managed to get one back in the third, but were unable to take advantage of having two on and one out in the fifth and dropped a tough one.
Brock Morningstar pitched well in the game, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings. Thomas got three hits.
