Whitehall baseball ekes out 1-run wins over Ludington, secures 2nd place in league

Whitehall closed out West Michigan Conference Lakes play Tuesday by winning a weather-suspended game over Ludington in eight innings, 5-4, to secure second place in the league. The Vikings then topped Ludington 2-1 in a district tune-up for both squads.
The games were played at Marsh Field.
The conference game was suspended April 22 when it was tied 4-4 after seven innings. In the continuation of the game Tuesday, the Vikings (15-15, 9-3 WMC Lakes) came up with the win when Nate Betz walked, stole second and advanced to third base on a throwing error by the Orioles' catcher, and came in to score on Evan Thomas' RBI single.
The full game between the teams was a pitchers' duel, and Whitehall got the better of it, allowing only three hits. Thomas, Brock Morningstar and Myles Welch teamed up on the three-hitter, with Morningstar getting the win. He allowed an unearned run on two hits in three innings, striking out five. Welch pitched 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit or a walk, and Thomas gave up just one hit in 1 2/3 innings.
The Vikings scored both their runs in the first inning, with Eli Winters lacing an RBI double and Welch following with a run-scoring single. Betz got three hits, and Welch had two.
